Breds notch track win at Rowan County

Sophomore Tanner Tumey has been a stalwart for the Breds track team this year. He specializes in both hurdles events and the triple jump.

The Harrison County Thorobreds, led by Tanner Tumey, captured the team title at the Rowan County Invitational Track Meet, held on Thursday, April 29, in Morehead.

The Breds won the 17-team invitational with 90 team points, well ahead of second-place Madison Southern (78). Third place went to Mason County, with 70 points.

Coach Robert Walker was pleased with the results at the Rowan County meet, but is even more excited for the future success of both the Breds and Fillies track teams.

“We are still very young and still have a long way to go,” said the long-time track coach. “But over the next few years, we will hard to beat, providing all our athletes stick with it and continue to improve.”

In the girls meet, Harrison County’s Fillies took fifth place overall, with 13 teams participating.

Host Rowan County racked up 113 points, well ahead of second-place Montgomery County (94.5) and third-place Fleming County (86). Mason County tallied 81 team points for fourth place and Harrison County was fifth with 65 team points.

Tumey was entered in four events and was a winner in three of them. He won both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles, the triple jump and was also on the third place 4x200 meter relay team.

In the 110 hurdles, Tumey won by nearly a full second over second place Austin Moreland, of Mason County. Harrison County’s Garrett Wilson was third.

In the 300 meter hurdles, Tumey again won by nearly one full second, this time over teammate Jack Howard, who finished second. Wilson took fourth.

Tumey won the triple jump with a leap of 38 feet, 8 inches, well ahead of second place Sam Davis of Frankfort H.S.

In the 4x200 relay, Tumey was joined by teammates, Dylan Duckworth, Jaxson Zink and Mark Aubrey.

The boys 4x400 meter relay team also was victorious at the Rowan County meet. The team of Duckworth, Lawson Hunt, Hunter Jones and Jack Howard had a winning time of 3.49:67.

The Breds 4x100 meter relay team took second place with a time of 47.93. That team consisted of Zink, Jones, Korbin Gilkey and Marcus Aubrey.

The girls team was also led by its hurdlers.

Savannah Kennedy and MaKenna Dennie finished second and third, respectively, in the 100 meter hurdles. Kennedy was also second in the 300 meter hurdles with Madison Hunt finishing fourth.

The girls 4x200 relay team finished second. Those team members were Kadie Ripley, Madison Hunt, Savannah Kennedy and Arwen French.

The Fillies also took second place in the 4x100 meter relay event. Those team members were Hunt, Ridley French and Dennie.

Another second place was earned by the Fillies 4x400 meter relay team. Those runners included Hunt, Kennedy, French and Brooklyn Wiggins.

The Breds and Fillies hosted their last track meet of the season on Tuesday night, May 2, at the Harrison County Athletic Complex. They will have two more regular season meets left, before the Regional Track Meet that will be hosted at Scott High School, by Covington Holmes.
